Review:
Exhilaration is a vibrant and playful handbell composition inspired by a spontaneous melody hummed by the composer’s goddaughter at the age of eight, moments after finishing her final exam. Her carefree tune became the seed for this joyful piece.
Structured in a classic ABA ternary form:
Section A features a swinging style with light, playful rhythms, capturing the sense of release and delight after overcoming a challenge—where even footsteps feel lighter.
Section B shifts into a faster, more exuberant passage, expressing the thrill and freedom of engaging in joyful activities without pressure.
The final A section returns to the familiar cheerful theme, ending the piece with a sense of happiness and contentment.
Starting from a spark of childlike improvisation, Exhilaration unfolds with musical energy and emotional depth, celebrating the beauty found in life’s fleeting, joyful moments.
