Dance of the Duchesses
This short piece was written for the first act of Prokofiev's ballet Romeo & Juliet. It's known as Dance of the Duchesses, or sometimes Dance of the Knights. Either way, it's a stately dance done by the nobles at the Capulet party where Romeo sneaks in and first meets Juliet. This piece is particularly challenging for handbells because it is, above all, meant to be powerful; and bass support via low chimes or other instruments is encouraged.
