First Noel
This beloved Christmas carol originated in Cornwall county, England during the 13th or 14th century. It is thought that the tune was composed for or inspired by a Miracle Play, one of the earliest forms of theater which dramatized favorite Bible stories. The tune was first transcribed and published in its current form in 1823 by William Sandys, with additional new lyrics by Davies Gilbert, thereby bringing it into the modern era. Billy Brandt's arrangement, commissioned by the Badger State Girls Choir (Neenah, WI), features a straightforward handbell part, unison voices, and a flute obbligato. Although only the first two verses are included in the arrangement, it would be very easy to adapt the piece for use as accompaniment to the hymn. "The First Noël" was written as an expression of excitement and wonder at the birth of the Christ Child and although today’s world is very different from the time when this carol was first sung, we still sing ... and play it ... for the same reasons. The flute part is included, but is not reproducible; please purchase an extra copy for your flutist.
