Once to Every Man and Nation
Based on the Hymn tune EBENEZER, this plaintive melody is marked "Slow and mysterious". To achieve this atmosphere, the arranger sets the opening section over a steady, malleted, quarter-note pedal tone. A fully-scored section follows, emphasizing the melodic triplet material. The meter then moves from 4/4 to 3/4 in a spirited passage that opts a dotted rhythm instead of the triplet. After that jaunt the music slows a little and moves into a flowing, LV section. The final section is fast and bright with lots of staccatos and martelatto.
