Tom grew up in Tucson, Arizona and was first introduced to music through a church handbell group just after graduating from high school. Music quickly captivated his full attention, motivating him to complete both a bachelor's degree and master's degree at Northern Arizona University.
After six years of study in music history, choral conducting, and handbells under Douglas J. Benton, Tom moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to join Sonos Handbell Ensemble. During his four years under the guidance of James Meredith, Tom performed classical music professionally for national and international audiences, and developed instructional material on bass bells for Sonos' in-depth workshops.
