Review:
This varied arrangement of the 15th century French processional uses randomly malleted handbells, handchimes, finger cymbals (or triangle), and chime tree to create a mystical, ethereal introduction. A simply flowing statement of the tune is presented, followed by a rhythmic, energetic, and urgent-feeling section in 7/8 meter, including the use of finger cymbals and wood block. The words “Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel is come to you, O Israel!” are grandly and joyously illustrated, and the work concludes as ethereally as it began, but with softly singing bells. 127 measures. Keys of d minor and c minor.
