Review:
“Fortitude” is a welcome addition to ringTrue’s “Split Level Series” – pieces written with targeted L1 positions to seamlessly (and invisibly) integrate new or L1 ringers into an established group, to allow multi-level or multi-grade groups to successfully perform together, or to allow established ringers to practice 4iH in easier positions. Three compatible scores are included in the folio. Written for Linda Ashley’s group in which the seasoned ringers played in the bass range, “Fortitude’s” L2 core piece (A1) covers 4 ringing positions G4-G5 (chimes optional), with the option of adding two more L2 positions at CD4 and EF4. Adding L1 ringers above and below adds depth: C4-F4 (and down to C3) ringers may play from the L1 Bass score (A3); Any number of ringers from A5-C7 may play L1 either from the main score or from the more easily read L1 Treble score (A2). A few ringers to a full range Chime Choir II may join the performance, playing from the two L1 scores. A2 treble and A3 bass “Fortitude” offers a strong, rhythmic statement in school, concert, festival or worship settings (using the sacred sub-title “A Strong Spirit”). Audiences will take note of the richness of this original piece in c minor since most of the attention is in the bass.
