Review:
Melodic minor scales* are showcased throughout this perky original piece, along with rhythmic marts and optional chimes and tambourine. Two compatible editions are available, but not just the 'add-on some exterior notes' kind of 2-3 and 3-5 setting. These two scores place the slightly exotic Middle Eastern-type melody in different ranges to adjust for the bell range limits. So the Level 2+ scores are not identical, but each is even more appropriate for their bell range. Even though they are different, these 2 scores CAN be practiced simultaneously, as in a Festival or school concert setting.
This piece was commissioned by the Quest Committee for Gifted and Talented Students and dedicated to the 8th Grade Concert Ringers at Thomas Harrison Middle School (Harrisonburg, Va.), Kimly Schlabach, director. "The Quest", with its catchy tune, appropriate percussive techniques, and interesting harmonics, is sure to become a favorite go-to piece – and is a wonderful choice for concerts, school, festivals, conferences and even worship, using the sub-title "Seek & Ye Shall Find". The optional tambourine part is included in the score. The sound file includes both scores – first #1 (2-3 octave) and then #2 (3-7 octave).
*Melodic minor - The ascending scale is a major scale with a lowered third tone, and the descending scale is a natural minor scale with lowered 3rd, 6th, and 7th tones.
