Review:
Subtitled “Word of God, Light Our Way,” Illumina is a paraphrase of Psalm 119:105-108. Included above the music is the Psalm text to provide some creative reference for ringers and directors. Throughout the piece, the words “light our way” are illustrated in the form of two eighth notes and a quarter note. This original composition opens with a plainchant played on optional handchimes accompanied by random ringing, then is followed by a richly harmonized statement of the main theme. A more active section follows with fluid LV sixteenth note patterns accompanying a variation of the theme. A return to the opening plainchant with random ringing concludes this prayerful composition. Compatible editions are available for 2-3 and 3-5 octaves of handbells and optional handchimes.
