Review:
This original work was inspired by a novel, “The First Binding” by R.R. Virdi and set in the fantasy city of Keshum. The ‘sparrows’ of Keshum does not refer to ‘birds’ – but to bands of street urchin thieves. Derek imagined his musical city of Keshum to be much like Marrakech or Baghdad and thus, used the Hindi or double-harmonic minor scale – which imparts that impression beautifully! In addition, he has added Water Dips which bend the sustained pitches and invoke an even more exotic feel to the work. It abounds with energy and is mostly Rung with many LV passages, important accented notes, and even some Trills. This is an amazing and innovative work that will capture the audience’s attention and awaken their imaginations!
