Review:
Ode to Joy, an iconic favorite, is now immediately accessible even to very new ringers - with two Level 1 reproducible scores to choose from, each with individual extracted coordinating parts for every ringer. This short chordal setting allows anywhere from 8 to 28 bells be used, from 2 octaves to 5 octaves. Unison Exercises are included to practice note reading (line and space notes) and rhythms that will be encountered in the piece. Two scores are offered: “A” with a core of 8 bells from C6-C7 and optional notes from B5 down to C3 (and upper Shellies if you wish)– and “B” with the core from G5-G6 and optional notes from F5 down to C4. These two scores are in different keys, so they are NOT compatible. Coordinating with each of these settings are extracted parts on 5-line staves for every single ringing position, so new ringers can more easily read their own notes isolated on the staff. If you have a diverse beginning group, the more advanced ringers may read from the full score while individuals who need a little extra help can ring from their own extracted parts. These extracted parts, in addition to being used as a “first reading” experience, may also be used for additional learning experiences: 1) Introducing the magic of ensemble ringing in group-strengthening workshops, 2) Helping ringers who are challenged to track a part in a full score, 3) Multi-choir events allowing diverse ringers to all play together, each from a suitable score, and 4) a Challenge game as more experienced ringers move from part to part to practice different rhythms and assignments. Part of the “Class ring” series from ringTrue Handbell Music – featuring pedagogically-sound pieces that teach Level-appropriate sequential skills and are also worthy of classroom time and concert performance. The recording on Handbellworld.com is the arranger's 4th grade class after about 3 rehearsals.
