Take a group of lively, creative 5th graders who are in their 2nd year of ringing, lead them through a carefully sequenced composing project – and here’s the result--a fun, accessible L2 piece with lots of personality – and lots of techniques, of course! “In the Beginning” is aptly named – and appropriate for general worship – use the original title “Opus Primus” (First Work) for concert and festival use. Everyone rings and learns lots of music theory along the way: relative minor keys, augmented rhythms, inverted chords and scales, sequencing, repetition, variation and more. The bonus piece “FOG TRAIN” is also a 5th grade composition project from an earlier class, smaller in size….totally different in scope – mysterious and slow, chromatic and eerie. If you have young ringers, they will enjoy ringing something written by their peers, and adults may be surprised at the catchy unfettered melody and the interesting form and accompaniment patterns. “In the Beginning” is part of the “Class ring Series” from ringTrue, which focuses on pedagogically sound music that carefully teaches particular concepts and skills through pieces that are also performance-worthy, so class/rehearsal time is well-spent.
