40 Days in the Desert

Peters, William, ringTrue

Haunting and heroic at the same time, “40 Days in the Desert” captures struggle and victory within the same breath. Written in single pulse 3/4 time, the strong melodic lines are supported by even stronger chords in c minor, with shifts in harmonics to G Major that brighten the mood briefly: Perfect for Lent, Passion Week, or any meditative moment in worship. When using the subtitle “The Ghost of Success” for secular concert and festival, the audience might be reminded of an Anime theme, which is not surprising since the composer, William Peters, was in 7th grade when he wrote this piece. He asked his handbell teacher (Kath Wissinger) to look at it and see if it would work for bells. With some very minor editing, William’s score showcases a new creative talent in handbells and beyond.

Amazing Grace

Traditional, arr. Wissinger, Kathleen, ringTrue

Three variations of Amazing Grace weave a lovely tapestry of this beloved tune: Part 1 showcases the single-line melody with a very simple accompaniment; Part 2 enlivens the tune with an obbligato part in the treble - and the melody and stronger rhythmic statement in the lower bells; Part 3 is bolder yet, with richer chording and some harmonic interest. It’s perfect for any part of a worship service. Notes on setting up a Bell Tree and ways to practice Bell Trees at home are included.

Four Square

Wissinger, Kathleen, ringTrue

Two L2 ringers in a class of beginners inspired “Four Square” – a Split-Level piece that keeps experienced ringers on their toes playing eighth notes while new ringers learn to ring easy half and whole note chords. The catchy 4-note melody (either from G to C (plus D) or from C to F (plus G)) can be played from a number of scores in two different ranges (“A” for 2-5 oct.in the Key of G - and “B” for 3-5 oct. in the Key of C). If more L2 ringers are included, they can double the melody an octave above or below or play from a score which involves 3 ringers sharing the 4-note melody. Opportunities to ring 3 bells in a single position or 4iH is also noted. Ringers really love this simple little piece and ask for it again and again, even long after the need for such a piece has passed. Use the sub-title “Fourfold Praise” for sacred settings.

Let Love Be Our Voice

Wissinger, Kathleen, ringTrue

Hope and healing, claimed by choosing love as a response to violence, is the focus of “Let Love Be Our Voice.” Written shortly after angry and violent public demonstrations in Charlottesville, Virginia (the composer lives an hour away) – and edited in the wake of the Las Vegas massed shooting – this heartfelt original hymn touches on the many ways we can respond positively to evil in the world when facing devastating news or our questioning children and even those responsible for the mayhem. And finally, Jesus gives us the answer we don’t always want to hear: “Love your enemies.” A calm but rhythmic accompaniment introduces the easy-to-learn tune and conversational text, ending with the refrain each time: “Let love be our choice. Let love be our voice.”
