"The Bells Must Ring!" is the Winner of the 2021-2022 Handbell Musicians of America Area 3 Adult Handbell Festival Composition Contest. Each version - 3-5 octaves and 2-3 octaves - stands alone as a handbell prelude, but they also are compatible for use in massed ringing or in a bell program with multiple choirs.
 
Celebration for Bells:  Benton, Robin,,FM
English composer Robin Benton has created this delightful, celebratory work for the 20th International Handbell Symposium to be held in Nashville, TN, in 2022. The Symposium theme is "Out of Many, One" – and that theme is honored within this original work. A delightful melody sets the ambiance and is beautifully developed in this joyous piece.

Opening with a bright, contemporary fanfare, this energetic work presents a popular hymn tune in creative rhythmic, lyric, and chord-based variations.

Inspired by the text, "Prone to wander, Lord I feel it," the opening segment in this setting creates a quieter, more contemplative mood. The momentum eventually builds for the following rousing verse, followed by another more thoughtful verse on chimes.

Commissioned by a church in celebration of their 50th anniversary, this arrangement makes use of the tune NETTLETON from John Wyeth's "A Repository of Scared music, 1813." Mallets on tabled bells in bouncy, fanfare rhythms provides the accompaniment for the first section. This is contrasted by a delicate section that incorporates five chimes in the 2-0ctave range on the melody.
 
Compassion:  Krug, Jason,,BE
Challenging rhythms, meter and mood changes characterize this original composition for 3-7 octaves and an optional B flat 1 as well as 2 octaves of handchimes.
 
Day to Rejoice, A:  Mazzatenta, Michael,,CP
This joyous and beautiful original from the pen of Michael Mazzatenta is rhythmic, full of fun techniques (TD, malleted bells on table, mart, and echo), and features a very nice section where the optional handchimes play the melody.

A delicate and gentle introduction gives way to an energetic and upbeat setting of the well-known song, accompanied with malleted and thumb damped bells.

This arrangement of "Dona Nobis Pacem" was the first-prize-winner in an internet arranging contest created by internationally renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma and sponsored by Sony Music and Indaba Music in 2009.

This piece was a very popular solo turned community sing-along tune of the 80s, which was popularized by Hong Kong pop singer Alan Tam. This song was widely sung throughout Asia at its time, because of its lyrics & melodic phrases.

This well-crafted, original composition is ideal for a festival, concert, or worship setting looking for a grand and regal statement. Level 2 ringing with many engaging sounds and techniques makes it full of interest, accessible and, fun to ring.

Alex Guebert brings us achingly beautiful music filled with sophistication and a heartfelt sense of beauty in a piece that is technically very straightforward and mastered quickly.

Karen Buckwalter has given us an innovative take on the beloved hymn tune NICAEA. The opening gives the tune a meditative feel, complete with unexpected harmonies before growing in intensity to a more traditional, chordal setting of the tune.
 
Hope for Reconciliation:  Afdahl, Lee J.,,BE

Lee Afdhal’s original work begins with a somber feeling of tension which gives way to a mournful melody of yearning. The middle section drives the piece forward before the return of the opening theme, which now has a more hopeful feeling than before.

Luna is a composition dedicated to mankind, who experienced all kinds of sufferings during the pandemic over the past few years.

Luna is the divine embodiment of the moon. There are plenty of myths and legends about the moon's power. People believe that moonlight brings hope in the darkness. It brightens the darkest corners of the night. Moonlight is the guidance for vulnerable ships sailing on the sea.

"Mosaic: Folk Songs of Canada" was chosen by the Handbell Musicians of Canada as their selection for the 19th International Handbell Symposium in Hong Kong in 2020. It features five Canadian folk songs: "Flunky Jim", "Feller from Fortune", "Red River Valley", "Ho Ho Watanay", and "Vive la Canadienne". Each of these unique tunes has been creatively arranged into this engaging collection. (Lyrics to these folk songs are included.)

"Praise the Lamb who Reigns in Glory" was commissioned for the glory of God and in honor of the congregation of the historic Lexington Presbyterian Church, Lexington, Virginia, for the February 9, 2003 rededication of their sanctuary, which was the rebuilt after a devastating fire.

"Prisms," written over 30 years ago, is one of Bill Payn's first compositions written for handbells. It was composed because he was concerned that the high and low bell ringers in his senior high ensemble at the time (The Ringers On-the-Green of the Presbyterian Church of Morristown) were often just standing with very little to do while the middle bells seemed to be having all most fun! "Prisms" was written specifically to engage ALL of the ringers.

Throughout all of life’s trials, hope gives us the strength to rebuild and confidently reinvent our circumstances. "Rays of Hope" is an original piece for handbells that depicts the remnants of a storm that has passed, and then begins to hint at the light that is coming to bring us a new day.

Jason Krug gives us his own stirring take on this traditional hymn, and even those unfamiliar with the original tune will be moved to worship.
 
Remembering:  Behnke, John A.,,JA

"Remembering" is an original piece to remember those that have passed away due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There are minimal bell changes and no sharing of bells. The music begins with a tolling bell and a melody emerges which seeks to express the significance of each life lived, including their struggle with this virus.

Note: 2 octave version is NOT compatible with the 3-5 octave version.

This award-winning piece by Sallie Lloyd is given new life and enhanced sound in this 5-7 octave revision of the original 4-octave composition! Driving eighth notes and rich harmonies abound throughout the piece, which has a very classical feel overall.
 
Savior Like a Shepherd Lead Us:  Various,Larson, Lloyd,BE
This arrangement, dedicated to a handbell choir director for more than thirty years of leadership, is an idyllic choice for use in worship. Combining the Bach chorale "Sheep May Safely Graze" with the hymn tune BRADBURY, it masterfully alternates between the two tunes, casting them both in a new light.

Crafted by a noted handbell composer, the beautiful and haunting lyrical melody in g minor becomes increasingly intense throughout this musical journey, finishing as it began with a sense of reflection and prayer.

The tune TERRA BEATA is the basis for this flexible arrangement which includes optional parts for flute, organ and congregation.

Arranger Matthew Compton has provided us with another high energy arrangement. True to a Toccata, this arrangement based on the “King’s Weston” tune flies along with fiery rhythms and continuous intensity from beginning to end.

OLD HUNDREDTH is the tune used in this knockout arrangement. A straightforward chorale setting leads into an energetic toccata section, then an easy fughetta morphs into a brilliant finale.

Vasylyna's Tears was written in honor of the Ukrainian people, who continue to struggle for their freedom under a government that refuses to heed their cries. Vasylyna is a common Ukrainian woman's name - she weeps for her lost countrymen.

Combining this well-known spiritual with a fast, yet "bluesy" feel creates a fun and exciting experience for players and listeners alike.
 
Wellerman:  Traditional,Wissinger, Kathleen ,RE
"Wellerman", a traditional New Zealand sea shanty (c. 1860), hit the internet by storm in early 2021 with Nathan Evans' TikTok collaboration. This jaunty arrangement includes some of the voicing heard in the now-famous recording. Two non-compatible scores are included in the folio: Score A is Level 2 for 2 octaves, and Score B (more complex) is Level 3 for 3 or 5 octaves.
