This composition is based, in part, on Bach's "Suite No. 1 (Prelude) for Unaccompanied Cello" and is reflective in its character. The challenge comes in the many ritards, accelerandos and other tempo changes.

Church's One Foundation, The

A lengthy, fanfare opening leads into a straight-forward setting of the hymn tune AURELIA. This is followed by a staccato passage and then by a section of echo technique. The end is big with the fanfare motive and shook high treble chords.

"Covenant" is a setting of Exodus 19:3-6 for voices and instruments. The music is based on a pentatonic scale, uses contrasting vocal and instrumental forces, and includes an optional retrain for the congregation.

Crosswind

This original composition could have easily been named "Cross Meters!". Energy and shifting emphasis is achieved through the changing from 4/4 to 7/8 to 6/8 and in no particular pattern! Other drive comes from the mallets on tabled bells and martellatos in the middle section. A worthy challenge.

A fanfare opening leads into a bouncy, staccato passage with the melody played by handchimes (2 octaves are needed). A slower section follows with bell changes in all registers. The tempo picks up again and drives to the ending shake and ring touch.

"Elegy" is a versatile, melodic composition which may be performed as a handbell piece, bells and solo instrument, or as a bell solo with keyboard accompaniment.

Festive, lyric, exciting, challenging! The driving 8th note accompaniment below a lyric, syncopated melody is beautiful and challenging. The middle section is slower but lyric.

For As the Rain Comes Down

All manner of special effects including 2 optional handchimes (E6 and E7), rainstick, finger cymbal and random ringing are scored to make the implication of the title a reality. However, this is NOT a rain storm, but more of a gentle, soaking rain. However, there are some passages with mart lifts for emphasis, but overall this original composition reflects the scripture in its sub-title: Isaiah 55:10.

The longest work is only 52 measures and some of the selections include optional chimes. A good folio to take to the mall, or retirement home or any "bell outing" at Christmas time.

The melody of the old spiritual is treated in simple, straight-forward style accompanied by half-note chords in the beginning passages. The melody appears in upper and middle registers. After a key change the LV and mallet on suspended bells technique is used to enhance the song. An adagio phrase quietly ends the work.

God Who Stretched the Spangled Heavens

The hymn tune Holy Manna is set for 3,4 or 5 octaves and optional 2 octaves of chimes. Mallets on suspended bells gives the impression on the "spangled heavens" throughout the work.

Good Christian Friends and This Joyful Eastertide

This two arrangement folio begins with a straightforward arrangement of the tune GELOBT SEI GOTT. Some accidentals, only one special effect in the last two measures and dynamic changes provide challenge to the level two ringer. The arrangement of the tune VRUECHTEN contains a bit more challenge with more special techniques, meter changes, dotted rhythms and running eighth-notes.

His name is John, and you, little child, will be called the prophet of the Most High, so begins this SATB anthem with handbell (Db5-A6) accompaniment.

M Robert Lowry's 19th-century tune is set here in flowing texture with the melody found in varying registers of the bells. A nice passage of TD-R creates a special effect in the upper bells while the lower bells present the melody.

How Great Thou Art

The Swedish hymn tune, O STORE GUD, is set for bells and optional 3-octaves of chimes. A quiet mallet roll on tabled, bass bells begins the work, which gradually builds to excitement with shakes and chordal melody. In a slow passage the chime melody is "sandwiched" between upper, rung accompaniment and bass, syncopation played with mallets on tabled bells.

Two octaves of chimes are required as the beginning 12 measures are rendered on a chime tree. Later the pluck lift effect is combined with the mart lift technique in the accompaniment. The textures build until the end tapers off in echo-like lines and fades.

The second is composed of three short pieces all of which present a mood of the morning. The introduction of the last of these three, Dance, may be used as a processional and/or bell tree. Dan Gibbs has created an exultant arrangement of the hymn tune Lobe den Herren. His combination of non-traditional harmonies and varying tempos help to produce the jubilant character of the piece.

If desired, the congregation may sing along with this through-composed setting of "Lobe den Herren" for bells and organ. A flourish of chromaticism sets up the melody's entrance, which proceeds in chordal structure. Interludes are interspersed among the stanzas.

Prepare the Royal Highway

Based on the hymn tune BEREDEN VAG FOR HERRAN, arranger Lee Afdahl has incorporated two instances of random ring in the introduction. The melody enters in a single unison line and then is joined at the octave. The texture builds as the piece moves along. Ringers will be challenged to work on linear thinking as they reach the section with running eighth-note passages. Mart-lifts, shakes and LV technique are used.

Highlights of this work include a stately walking bass in mm. 1-16, a thumb-damp section with the melody in the middle, the use of triplet figures and a big finish. An optional trumpet part is included.

An original composition which contains 2 complete contrasting pieces: 1) "The Shepherd's Pipe" in compound meter & 2) "Songs of Thanks" in simple meter.

Psalm 51

A separate score for an optional marimba (also playable on synthesizer or keyboard) is included in this original composition, which takes its inspiration from King David's prayer of repentance. The handbell score resembles a marimba percussion score with its sixteenth-note rhythms and patterns. The focus is on the rung sound of bells with no special effects called for other than the LV technique.

Rejoice! features the familiar hymn tune FOUNDATION, as well as new music by John Leavitt setting the text, "Rejoice, angelic choir rejoice!" Three octaves of bells are optional.

The majority of this setting of the Irish hymn tune is characterized by smooth, flowing textures built on eighth-note pulses. The sections are marked Andante, Rubato and Tempo I. A sprightly passage of staccato adds contrast before returning to a stronger, ending section.

3-5 octaves of handbells provide optional, but triumphal accompaniment to this SATB Easter anthem. (The parts are available on the Augsburg Fortress website.) The bells ring in "tall chords" and peal-like passages to emphasize the glorious message of this season.

This original composition begins with rubato passages set in 5/4, 6/4, and 4/4 before settling down to a strict time where the quarter note = 76. The mood is contemplative with chromatic-harmonic movement. Tripled octaves on the melody add dramatically as the mood thickens before returning to the original material.

The two Swedish melodies set in this 3 or 4 octaves arrangements are Tryggare kan ingen vara (Children of the Heavenly Father) and Ner Han Kommer (When He Cometh). "Children" is heard first and is treated in a gentle manner with broken-chord accompaniment. After two verses in a major key the tune is then presented in minor tonality and provides and interesting contrast. After a break the next tune enters and in one section is treated as a march.

Variations on Gather Us In

Nine handchimes in the lower 3-octave range add optional interest to this setting of a Marty Haugen tune. After a brief introduction the first variation employs mallets on tabled bells in martial rhythms to accompany the melody.
